Recovering Your Lawn & Garden from Heavy Rainfall

How to recover your lawn from heavy rain?

Nobody is strange to rainy days and the threat of storms in the summer season leaves devastating consequences for homeowners across the country.

Whenever a garden, yard, or lawn gets heavy rainfall, the water stays stagnant for many days. The grass and planters in your lawn become prone to fungal diseases, weeds, and other issues that might affect the health of your plants and shrubs.

However, there’s a solution to every problem that heavy rainfall brings. After a period of heavy storm or rainfall, it is challenging to recoup your lawn or garden. But the following preventive measures for your lawn can help to stop the long-term damage before it ruins your grass and plants.

Tips to save the overwatered lawn

Lawns get overwatered after a long period of rain and hail. Due to the excess water, the soil in the lawn becomes saturated and usually collects in the low or steep areas of your lawn.

However, you would have to start the following preventive measures until it recovers completely from the stagnant water:

If your grass appears yellow in patches, fertilize it as soon as possible. Flood water deprives your grass of nutrients but the fertilizer can help to enrich your grass with nutrients. Thus, helping to recover your grass quicker.

Twigs, broken branches, debris, and rusty leaves increase the chances of fungal diseases and weed. Therefore, it is recommended to remove them from your lawn.

Walking on wet grass can induce long-term damage to the grass. So, dry out the water on the grass with a blower before stepping on it.

How can you reduce water damage to the plants after rain?

Plants and grass become damaged and flattened after heavy rainfall. Although, the water does not do much damage to the plants but it ruins the structural integrity of the grass. However, the plants return to their natural health after the water rain dries out.

Many plants can survive, even after a long period of a storm or heavy rainfall. However, others might get damaged and lose their structural integrity.

If the leaves and twigs have become damaged, cut them off to make room for new branches, twigs, and leaves.

It is better to run a soil test before fertilizing as overfertilization and little sunlight due to blockage from raked leaves and rotten branches.

How to prevent long-term damage from heavy rainfall?

The best way to secure the structural integrity of your grass, plants, and lawn is to follow all the preventive measures before the storm arrives:

  • Raise the beds of your garden to reduce the chance of flooding in low-lying areas of the lawn
  • Keep the drains and gutters clean to prevent flooding near them
  • Keep an ideal height of grass- the longer the length, the more water it will trap. Hence, increasing the chance of fungal diseases

Conclusion

Restoring the health of your lawn after a heavy storm season is quite important as it will help you prevent weed overgrowth, yellow patches, and fungal diseases.
